Step-by-step
- 1Butter one side of each bread slice.
- 2Build sandwiches: cheese only, ham + cheese, or plain buttered — make a few of each.
- 3Heat a frying pan or sandwich press over medium heat.
- 4Cook each toastie 2–3 min per side until golden and cheese melts.
- 5Slice into fingers or triangles and serve on a shared tray so everyone can pick.
Adapt for a picky eater
- ·Make it milder: skip strong spices, herbs and onions — keep salt, butter or a touch of cheese instead.
- ·Swap an ingredient: trade anything they avoid for a safe favourite (e.g. cucumber sticks instead of cooked veg).
