Step-by-step

  1. 1Butter one side of each bread slice.
  2. 2Build sandwiches: cheese only, ham + cheese, or plain buttered — make a few of each.
  3. 3Heat a frying pan or sandwich press over medium heat.
  4. 4Cook each toastie 2–3 min per side until golden and cheese melts.
  5. 5Slice into fingers or triangles and serve on a shared tray so everyone can pick.

Adapt for a picky eater

  • ·Make it milder: skip strong spices, herbs and onions — keep salt, butter or a touch of cheese instead.
